China’s ancient and water towns preserve the country’s pre-modern face — walled cities, timber houses, stone bridges, canals and lane networks that have changed little in centuries. They are the easiest way to experience old China in a day or an overnight, usually within a couple of hours of a major city.
The must-visit ancient towns
- Pingyao (Shanxi) — China’s best-preserved walled county city, with a Ming-Qing street plan and China’s first modern bank.
- Fenghuang (Hunan) — stilted Miao and Tujia houses over the Tuojiang River, glowing at night.
- Hongcun & Xidi (Anhui) — the painted Huizhou villages of white walls, black tiles and moon ponds (UNESCO).
- Wuzhen, Xitang, Tongli, Zhouzhuang — the classic canal water towns near Shanghai and Hangzhou.
- Lijiang & Shuhe (Yunnan) — Naxi old town with canals, below Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
- Dali (Yunnan) — a Bai-grid old town at the foot of Cangshan, on Erhai Lake.
- Shaoxing (Zhejiang) — canals, stone bridges, black-awning boats and rice wine.
How to visit
- Base yourself in a nearby big city (Pingyao from Taiyuan, water towns from Shanghai, Fenghuang from Zhangjiajie) and take high-speed rail or a bus.
- Stay one night inside the walls — the lanes empty out after the day-trippers leave.
- Buy the combined ticket for the courtyard houses and carry small cash for boat rides.
Best time to go
Spring and autumn give mild weather and soft light. Summers are hot and crowded; winters are quiet and atmospheric but cold in the north. Avoid the National Day holiday (1 to 7 October).
