Guilin and its countryside sit in a compact corner of Guangxi, which is why it is the one part of China you can genuinely cover in a long weekend. The usual mistake is booking the wrong number of days: three days is enough for the river and Yangshuo, five days is what you need before the terrace villages stop feeling like a drive-by.
The short answer
| Days | What you actually get | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 3 days | Li River cruise to Yangshuo, West Street in the evening, one karst valley or cave | Weekend trips, transit stops, first-time karst look |
| 4 days | Adds Longji (Dragon’s Backbone) terraces or a slow morning on the Yulong River | Photography, families, travellers who dislike early starts |
| 5 days | Adds Xingping, Tongji and Mingshi old villages, with one travel-free afternoon | Hiking, rural walks, a real pace change from a city stay |
How the pieces fit together
The Li River cruise runs from Guilin down to Yangshuo and takes about four hours on the slow boat; the mountain scenery near Xingping is the stretch printed on the back of the 20 yuan note, which is why that stop is worth the detour once, not twice. Yangshuo itself works best as a base of two nights: the Yulong River bamboo raft in the morning, the West Street food scene after dark, and a cycling loop between the two if the heat allows.
Longji’s terraced hillsides are a half-day drive from Guilin and are at their most photographic when the paddles hold water in late spring, then again golden before the autumn harvest. In deep summer they are green but wet; in winter they are bare and often grey, so we usually route winter guests towards the river and the old villages instead.
Getting around without losing hours
- Guilin to Yangshuo by bus is roughly 90 minutes; by river boat it is a sightseeing day, not a transfer.
- Yangshuo county sights are spread out — a private car with driver is faster than chasing local buses if you have under five days.
- Guilin to Guangzhou or Shenzhen by high-speed rail fits a weekend extension without a domestic flight.
Which version to plan
- Guilin 3-day itinerary — the compressed river-and-town version.
- Guilin 4-day itinerary — adds the terraces without a rush.
- Guilin 5-day itinerary — villages, walks and one slow afternoon.
