On the north-eastern Tibetan plateau, the vast blue sweep of Qinghai Lake and the glass-flat, cloud-reflecting Chaka Salt Lake (“mirror of the sky”) make one of China’s most dramatic and photogenic short trips, usually based in Xining.
Best time to visit
July for rapeseed flowers and warm lake weather (book early — peak crowds); June and early September are calmer. Winter gives frozen turquoise and blue-ice on Chaka with almost no visitors, but it is very cold.
How many days
- 2 days — Qinghai Lake loop + Chaka Salt Lake.
- 3 days — add Ta’er Monastery, Riyue Mountain and the Menyuan flower fields.
Getting there & around
Fly or take high-speed rail to Xining (from Xi’an ~5h, Lanzhou ~1h). The lake and salt lake are a ~2–3 h drive each way, so hire a car with driver or join a loop; the roads are good and the scenery is the point.
Top things to do
- Qinghai Lake shore at Erlangjian and the golden July rapeseed fields.
- Chaka Salt Lake — the mirror walkout and sunrise/sunset reflections.
- Ta’er (Kumbum) Monastery, a great Tibetan Buddhist seat, on the way.
- The Riyue (Sun-Moon) Mountain pass and the Qinghai-Tibet railway scenery.
- Menyuan rapeseed sea in mid-July.
A 2-day loop from Xining
- Day 1 — Xining → Ta’er Monastery → Qinghai Lake shore, lakeside night.
- Day 2 — over the grasslands to Chaka Salt Lake for the mirrors, return to Xining.
What to eat
Xining’s Muslim quarter: lamb skewers, hand-grabbed lamb, yoghurt, cold noodles and barley (采鋫) dishes — a taste of the Qinghai frontier.
FAQ
- How many days do you need for Qinghai Lake and Chaka? — Two to three days from Xining is the classic loop — one for Qinghai Lake and the Ta’er Monastery, one for the Chaka Salt Lake mirror, with a day spare for the Menyuan rapeseed fields.
- When is the best time to visit? — July is peak — golden rapeseed flowers around Qinghai Lake and long warm days — but it is also the busiest. June and early September are quieter and still lovely. Winter brings surreal frozen blue ice and few tourists.
- Is it a problem with altitude? — Mildly — Xining sits ~2,260 m, Qinghai Lake ~3,200 m and Chaka ~3,100 m. Most people are fine; take it easy the first day, stay warm and hydrated, and avoid strenuous hikes on arrival.
