April to May and September to October put the riverside and the concession streets in walking weather. Summers are muggy, though the lit embankments work late; winters are windy and grey, but that is when flocks of gulls ride the Haihe up from the estuary and locals come out to feed them — bring bread and a warm hat. Book intercity seats in advance around Golden Week and Labour Day; even half-hourly trains fill when Beijing empties.

Getting there & around
Intercity G and C trains run Beijing South to Tianjin in about thirty minutes, arriving at the central Tianjin station or Tianjin West; the airport (TSN) connects downtown by metro. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you land — buses, metro and DiDi all ride on phone payment. The old city is flat: the concessions, Culture Street and the river are a connected walk of a few kilometres, stitched together by metro lines with English signage. A day from Beijing needs no hotel at all; an evening show plus a late train is a complete Tianjin visit.

- Huangyaguan Great Wall — two hours northeast to restored ramparts above Jizhou’s pines, comparatively quiet outside weekends.
- Beijing, in reverse — the thirty-minute train lets you sleep cheaply in Tianjin and commute to the capital if your Beijing hotels are balking.
