Beijing’s summer heat drove the Qing court to build an answer in the Hebei hills: Chengde (承德), an hour from the capital by bullet train. Its Mountain Resort — a walled landscape of lakes, grassland and pines bigger than the Forbidden City — and the Outer Eight Temples around it form a UNESCO site that reads like Qing foreign policy in architecture: Mongol and Tibetan Buddhist temples, Chinese gardens, and a replica of Lhasa’s Potala Palace.
“Qing emperors' summer resort with grand temples and gardens.”
1–2 days in Chengde
The same sights, spread over 1–2 days rather than one; May–Oct is the friendliest window; room for a day trip and one unplanned afternoon.

Best time to visit
May to October, and the emperors were right: the basin stays cool while the North China plain bakes. July and August bring lotus on the resort lakes and peak weekend crowds; September turns the hills amber and empties the paths once the school groups are back home. October is crisp, golden and arguably the best month, while winter is cold, half-shut in mood and quietly beautiful if you like imperial solitude. Check the resort’s official site ahead for seasonal closures in the far grassland zones.
How many days you need
- 1 day — fast but real: the palace-and-lake half of the resort in the morning, Puning Temple’s giant wooden Guanyin before the train back.
- 2 days — the settled version: the resort’s mountain roads and deer parks, then the temple group with its gilded roofs, or a grassland plateau overnight in place of one temple morning.
Getting there & around
High-speed trains run from Beijing Chaoyang station to Chengde South in about an hour, with slow trains as the scenic alternative; the city has an airport, but rail wins door to door. Chengde is a chain of small valleys: taxis and DiDi tie the station, resort and temples together in fifteen to twenty-five minutes, and there is no metro. The resort is entered from the palace zone, and inside it is enormous — park shuttles and rentable bikes cover the distances if you plan honestly about your feet. Mountain weather is fast; a shower can blow through the valley and vanish inside an hour.
Top things to do
- Mountain Resort (Bishu Shanzhuang) — Kangxi and Qianlong spent most of the eighteenth century building it: austere wooden palace halls, a lake belt of causeways and pavilions, and the seventy-two scenic views the two emperors named themselves; budget a half day minimum.
- Puning Temple — a Han-Tibetan monastery raised in 1755 after a Qing victory; inside the red hall stands a lacquered thousand-armed Guanyin more than twenty metres tall, the largest wooden Buddha statue anywhere.
- Putuo Zongcheng, the “Little Potala” — white terraced masses climbing a hillside, a stage-set re-creation of Lhasa and the city’s best sunset silhouette.
- Xumi Fushou Temple — built in 1780 to receive the Panchen Lama’s audience with Qianlong; its pavilion still carries the original gold-glazed tiles, one of the few such roofs left in China.
- Qingchui Peak — a red rock needle above the Wuluan tributary that frames the resort’s outer ridge walks; the imperial story closes here too, where the Xianfeng emperor died in 1861 after fleeing Beijing.
Day trips
- Bashang grasslands — the plateau country two to three hours north by road: horseback, yurts and cold nights even in July; go overnight, or split the drive with a night in the hills.
- Qing Eastern Tombs — the UNESCO imperial cemetery at Zunhua, on the road back to Beijing; best taken as an add-on overnight, not a scramble from Chengde.
A 2-day Chengde itinerary
- Day 1 — Resort from the palace zone through the morning, tea-house lunch, then the grass-and-mountain roads in the afternoon and river lights in the evening.
- Day 2 — Puning early, Xumi Fushou and the Little Potala before lunch, then either the train back to Beijing or a pre-booked car out to the grasslands for a second night.
What to eat
Chengde eats like a frontier court: Manchu and Mongol lamb in clear broths and cumin-heavy roasts, millet congees, pine-mushroom dishes from the hills, and almond drinks sold everywhere against the dry mountain air. The imperial-banquet genre — the Manchu-Han Feast mythology — is performed by restaurants all over town; locals argue instead for street breakfasts of oat and buckwheat jelly, and they are usually right.
FAQ
- How many days do you need in Chengde? — One long day works from Beijing, but two lets you take the Mountain Resort slowly and still reach the great temples — or the grasslands.
- Is Chengde a good day trip from Beijing? — About an hour each way by high-speed rail makes it one of the best: the resort plus Puning Temple fits a full day with a seat reserved in advance.
- What is the Mountain Resort actually like? — A landscape, not a building — palace halls, lakes, causeways and grassland inside one wall; walkable only if you budget shuttles or bikes and half a day.
