Chinas beste alte und kleine Städte: Wo übernachten und wie besuchen? (2026)

China’s ancient and water towns preserve the country’s pre-modern face — walled cities, timber houses, stone bridges, canals and lane networks that have changed little in centuries. They are the easiest way to experience old China in a day or an overnight, usually within a couple of hours of a major city.

The must-visit ancient towns

  • Pingyao (Shanxi) — China’s best-preserved walled county city, with a Ming-Qing street plan and China’s first modern bank.
  • Fenghuang (Hunan) — stilted Miao and Tujia houses over the Tuojiang River, glowing at night.
  • Hongcun & Xidi (Anhui) — the painted Huizhou villages of white walls, black tiles and moon ponds (UNESCO).
  • Wuzhen, Xitang, Tongli, Zhouzhuang — the classic canal water towns near Shanghai and Hangzhou.
  • Lijiang & Shuhe (Yunnan) — Naxi old town with canals, below Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
  • Dali (Yunnan) — a Bai-grid old town at the foot of Cangshan, on Erhai Lake.
  • Shaoxing (Zhejiang) — canals, stone bridges, black-awning boats and rice wine.

How to visit

  • Base yourself in a nearby big city (Pingyao from Taiyuan, water towns from Shanghai, Fenghuang from Zhangjiajie) and take high-speed rail or a bus.
  • Stay one night inside the walls — the lanes empty out after the day-trippers leave.
  • Buy the combined ticket for the courtyard houses and carry small cash for boat rides.

Best time to go

Spring and autumn give mild weather and soft light. Summers are hot and crowded; winters are quiet and atmospheric but cold in the north. Avoid the National Day holiday (1 to 7 October).

Häufig gestellte Fragen

  • What are the most famous ancient towns in China? — The best-known are Pingyao (a walled Ming-Qing city), Fenghuang on the river in Hunan, Hongcun and Xidi for Huizhou architecture, and the Jiangnan water towns of Wuzhen, Xitang, Tongli and Zhouzhuang.
  • How many days do I need for an ancient-town visit? — Most are a comfortable overnight or a day trip from a nearby city — one night lets you see the lanes after the tour buses leave. Combine two or three water towns in a 2 to 3 day loop.
  • When is the best time to visit these small towns? — Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to November) are mild and photogenic; avoid the Oct 1 to 7 National Day peak when they are packed.
  • Are ancient towns touristy or authentic? — The famous ones are restored and busy by day, but staying overnight — or choosing quieter picks like Zhaoxing or Shaoxing — brings back the lived-in feel.
