Guía de viaje para la Ciudad Antigua de Pingyao 2026 — La ciudad antigua mejor conservada de China

Pingyao

Pingyao is a perfectly preserved Ming–Qing walled banking town in Shanxi — cobbled lanes, grey courtyards, the city wall, and China’s first draft-bank — glowing under red lanterns after the day-trippers leave.

“A whole Ming-Qing banking town inside its walls — the full circuit is an hour on foot.”

Visa & entry

Transit and visa-free rules change often — check the current list against your passport before booking.

Mejor época para visitar

April–June and September–October are mild and photogenic. Winter is cold but atmospheric, and the Spring Festival lantern season (late January–February) is magical and busy. Avoid the 1–7 October crowds.

How many days

  • 1–2 días — the walled city, streets and temples.
  • 2–3 días — add Shuanglin and Zhenguo temples and nearby villages.

Getting there & around

High-speed rail to Pingyao Guzhan — Taiyuan ~40 min, Xi’an ~2–3h — then a short shuttle to the city. The old town is walled and car-free: explore on foot, or by electric cart; the whole grid fits inside the wall.

Top things to do

  • Walk the entire Ming-era city wall at sunset.
  • Rishengchang — China’s first modern draft-bank.
  • The remarkably intact County Yamen (magistrate’s court).
  • Shuanglin Temple — superb Buddhist clay sculpture.
  • Zhenguo Temple — among China’s oldest wooden buildings.
  • The Confucius Temple and merchant courtyards of Ming–Qing Street.
  • Night lanterns and folk opera over the courtyard rooftops.

A 2-day Pingyao itinerary

  • Día 1 — City wall → Rishengchang → County Yamen → lantern night.
  • Día 2 — Shuanglin + Zhenguo temples → back lanes and teahouses.

What to eat

Shanxi flavours: braised Pingyao beef, knife-cut noodles (daoxiao mian), aged-vinegar dishes, wheat cakes and guolao fruit dessert.

Preguntas frecuentes

  • How many days do you need in Pingyao? — One night and two days is perfect — you can see the walls, banks and temples, then enjoy the lanes and lanterns after the day-trippers leave.
  • Is Pingyao worth visiting? — Yes — it is the most completely preserved walled city in China, a UNESCO site with a real living old town, Ming–Qing banks and temples rather than a restored set-piece.
  • Can you day-trip Pingyao from Xi’an? — You can by high-speed rail (~2–3h plus connections) but staying overnight is far better — the empty town after dusk is the whole point.
