When should you go, at a glance

April–May and September–October are the sweet spot for most first trips: mild weather and low rain across the classic Beijing–Xi’an–Shanghai and Guilin routes. June–August is peak domestic travel and hot/humid in the east, so head for the cool south-west (Yunnan, Guizhou) or the plateaus (Qinghai, Inner Mongolia). Winter is ideal for Harbin’s ice festival and warm Sanya beaches, while the Great Wall and Forbidden City are quiet and crisp.

China’s public holidays (crowd warnings)

Avoid domestic-travel crushes: Spring Festival (late Jan–Feb), Labour Day (~1–5 May) and National Day Golden Week (1–7 October), when trains, flights and top sites sell out.
