Hong Kong (香港) is a harbour city of granite hills and shaved-flat shorelines, ceded to Britain in 1842 and returned to China in 1997 as a Special Administrative Region with its own courts and currency. Cantonese, Shanghainese, Southeast Asian and Western cooking stack into a few square kilometres. For foreign travellers it is the smoothest international gateway into southern China, and the Delta opens south from it.
“Dramatic harbour, skyline and street food at a global crossroads.”

Visa & entry
Transit and visa-free rules change often — check the current list against your passport before booking.
Best time to visit
Mid-October through December is the best of the year: typhoons finished, humidity relaxed, hiking air clear. January to March is cool, damp and often grey. April and May turn showery; June to August is hot, and a storm can shut the cable car and island ferries for a day, so keep a buffer. Chinese New Year, Christmas and National Day bring the crowds and the light installations.
How many days you need
- 2 days — the core: Central’s lanes and escalators, Victoria Peak at dusk, a Star Ferry crossing, Kowloon’s temples and night market.
- 3 days — adds Lantau for the big Buddha and the stilted village of Tai O, plus a ridge walk such as the Dragon’s Back.
- 4–5 days — the version that also takes Macau as one more day, without feeling like a transit passenger.
Getting there & around
Hong Kong International Airport sits on reclaimed land at Chek Lap Kok, with the Airport Express reaching Central in about 24 minutes. Hong Kong is a separate customs territory reached by land from the mainland, so confirm current entry requirements for your passport with official channels before you book. West Kowloon station plugs the city into the mainland high-speed network, Shenzhen under an hour away and Guangzhou a little beyond. Inside, use the MTR: fast, English-signed, and it takes an Octopus card or any contactless bank card at the gates. Trams, minibuses, ferries and walking do the rest.
Top things to do
- Victoria Peak at last light — 552 metres above the water, up the funicular tram that has run since 1888, for the moment the office towers switch on across the harbour.
- Star Ferry crossing — a working Victorian institution between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui. Sit upstairs, go at rush hour.
- Temple Street night market — Kowloon’s stall row of gadgets, herbs and fortune tellers, with a late-night food line that is the real draw.
- Central’s mid-levels — ride the covered escalator uphill, then walk back past an 1840s Man Mo Temple, antique shops and the side lanes behind the bar streets.
- Wong Tai Sin and Chi Lin Nunnery — a fortune-drawing temple famous for its lion-font oracle, then a Tang-style timber nunnery and garden that feels like another city.
- Lantau Island — cable car over to Po Lin Monastery and the Tian Tan Buddha, a bronze seated figure completed in 1993, then Tai O’s stilt houses.
- Hills and country parks — the Dragon’s Back ridge, Sai Kung’s coastal paths, and volcano-formed hexagonal columns in a UNESCO global geopark, all on public transport.
Day trips
- Macau — a short flight or ferry hop for a UNESCO old town and a different cuisine; its own entry formalities apply.
- Shenzhen — under an hour by high-speed rail for electronics markets, design museums and east-coast beaches.
- Lamma or Cheung Chau — ferries from Central to islands of seafood shacks, hiking loops and fishball stalls.
- Guangzhou — roughly 50 minutes by rail to the Delta’s food capital for a day of yum cha and river lanes.
A 3-day Hong Kong itinerary
- Day 1 — Central: escalators and mid-level temples, Hollywood Road, then the Peak before sunset, Star Ferry after, dinner on the Kowloon side.
- Day 2 — Kowloon: Wong Tai Sin early, the nunnery garden, markets and food streets all afternoon, Temple Street at night.
- Day 3 — Lantau: cable car, big Buddha and monastery, Tai O for lunch, back through Tung Chung on the metro.
What to eat
Hong Kong eats at every level in the same street. Breakfast is a cha chaan tang: milk tea strained through a cloth stocking, French toast stacked with cold butter, a pineapple bun split hot. Lunch is yum cha or a bowl of noodle soup with char siu beside it. Dinner is a dai pai dong — an open-front stall with a wok roar you hear across the road — where you order roast goose with crackling, stir-fried rice noodles with scorch in them, and cold beer in a bucket. Street snacks do the rest: egg waffles torn apart fresh, congee with everything in it.
FAQ
- Is Hong Kong worth adding to a China itinerary? — Very. One of the world’s great harbours, hiking inside the city, the best eating per square kilometre in Asia, and easy rail into the Pearl River Delta.
- How many days is enough for Hong Kong? — Two covers the harbour, the Peak, Kowloon’s markets and a temple morning. Three is comfortable and buys you Lantau Island and a ridge walk.
- What is the easiest way to pay and get around in Hong Kong? — Tap a contactless bank card or an Octopus card at every MTR and ferry gate, and carry a little cash for market stalls. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay as well if you cross into the mainland.
