Huanglong (黄龙, the Yellow Dragon) is a single glacial valley in northern Sichuan whose whole floor is a staircase of mineral terraces. Calcium-rich water spills from pool to pool, each rim painted gold, turquoise or jade, for roughly three and a half kilometres. It is almost always done with Jiuzhaigou, an hour and a half away, and it is the higher of the two — the boardwalk climbs from about 3,200 m to 3,600 m, which changes how you should plan the day.

Best time to visit

The valley is at its best from May to October, and the pools read most vividly in autumn, when the surrounding forest turns. Late spring brings fuller water and fewer visitors. Winter can close sections of the boardwalk and the upper pools freeze, so treat November to March as a gamble and check the day before. Because the site sits above 3,000 m, weather shifts fast: a clear morning can turn to sleet by early afternoon, so carry a shell even in midsummer.

Getting there & around

Most travellers fly into Jiuzhaigou Huanglong Airport, which sits high on the plateau and is a drive of roughly an hour from the scenic area — arriving straight into that altitude is the main risk, so build in a slow first afternoon. From Chengdu the road takes the best part of a day; from Jiuzhaigou town, count on one and a half to two hours by car or bus. Inside the valley it is a single route: a cable car lifts you close to the top, then a boardwalk runs downhill past the pools to the gate. There is no looping back, and no shortcut if you skip the cable car — the uphill walk is long and steep.

• Morning — arrive at opening, take the cable car up, then walk the upper boardwalk to Wucai Pool while the light is clear.
• Midday — work downhill through the pool clusters; this is where you spend the time, not at the top.
• Afternoon — Huanglong Temple, then the lower boardwalk and the waterfall; descend to the gate by late afternoon.
• If you have a second day — sleep low, then do Munigou at an easy pace.

What to eat

This is Amdo Tibetan and Qiang country: yak meat in a hot broth, tsampa barley, butter tea, and simple noodle soups that suit a cold day at altitude. The valley itself has little beyond snack stalls, so eat properly in Songpan or Chuanzhusi before and after. Drink more water than you think you need and go easy on alcohol while you are acclimatising.
