Fenghuang (“Phoenix”) is Xiangxi’s showpiece: a 1,300-year-old Miao and Tujia river town of black-timber stilt houses, hanging lanterns and stone lanes on the Tuojiang — the romantic Hunan of writer Shen Congwen, ringed by minority hill villages.
“Stilted houses over the river, lantern light on the water, Miao silver in the shopfronts.”

Visa & entry
Transit and visa-free rules change often — check the current list against your passport before booking.
Best time to visit
April–October, with September–October the clearest. Spring is misty and green; the heavy rainy weeks can swell the river. Winters are damp but quiet. Mornings and nights beat the daytime tour crowds.
How many days
- 1–2 giorni — the old town at dusk and dawn.
- 3 giorni — add Miao villages and a Tuojiang boat, or link to Zhangjiajie.
Getting there & around
Fenghuang has its own high-speed rail station (Fenghuang Gucheng) — ~2h from Zhangjiajie, ~2.5h from Changsha — plus Tongren airport nearby. The old town is entirely walkable; a small boat or riverside seat is best at night.
Top things to do
- Stroll the stilt-house riverfront and covered Rainbow Bridge at night.
- Shen Congwen’s former residence and the old lanes.
- Cross the river to the South Mountain pagoda for the town panorama.
- Visit a Miao village (silverwork, drum towers, long-table banquet).
- Tuojiang River night boat and folk shows.
A 2-day Fenghuang itinerary
- Giorno 1 — old-town lanes, Rainbow Bridge, riverside lantern night.
- Giorno 2 — South Mountain pagoda → a Miao village → night boat.
What to eat
Xiangxi Hunan flavors: Fenghuang blood-duck, sour-soup fish, cured pork, glutinous rice and a bowl of local rice wine — boldly hot and sour.
Domande frequenti
- How many days do you need in Fenghuang? — One night is enough to see the ancient town properly — the crowds thin after dark and the lantern-lit Tuojiang River at night is the whole point; two nights adds Miao villages and river rafting.
- Is Fenghuang too touristy? — The core is busy by day, but stay the night, wander the back lanes at dawn, and it is still one of China’s most atmospheric river towns — birthplace of writer Shen Congwen.
- Can you combine Fenghuang with Zhangjiajie? — Easily — both sit in Hunan’s west about two hours apart by high-speed rail, so a Zhangjiajie mountains + Fenghuang old town loop is the classic pairing.
