Guangzhou (广州) is the capital of Guangdong and the older, hungrier, more livable half of the Pearl River Delta. It has been China’s southern trading port for a thousand years, and it is where Cantonese cooking and the yum cha ritual were codified. First-timers use it as a soft landing: rice-noodle breakfast, treaty-port lanes in the afternoon, the river lit up after dark, onward by rail in under an hour.
“Cantonese food capital — skyscrapers, old streets and morning tea.”

Best time to visit
October to December is the sweet spot: dry, mild, cool enough for all-day walking. January and February stay green but turn grey. Late February to April brings the return-of-south damp, when walls sweat and nothing dries. May to September is hot, sticky and typhoon-fed. The Canton Fair in April and October fills every train and dining room, so book ahead if your dates overlap.
必要な日数
- 1日 — morning dim sum, Shamian and the cathedral lanes, roast goose at dusk, Canton Tower glowing across the water.
- 2日間 — the comfortable version: add the ancestral hall, Yuexiu Park, one museum, a river boat.
- 3日間 — enough for a day of eating and wandering in Foshan or Shunde.
Getting there & around
Baiyun International Airport (CAN) sits north of the city, roughly 45 minutes by metro into the centre. Guangzhou South handles most high-speed arrivals — Shenzhen well under an hour, Changsha about two, Wuhan four — with Guangzhou East closer to the old core. Inside, the metro is cheap, clean and English-signed, DiDi works everywhere, and payment is almost entirely Alipay or WeChat Pay: set one up before you land.
Top things to do
- 広州塔 — 600 metres of steel lattice over the river; go up in late afternoon for day, dusk and night lights in one ride.
- 沙面島 — a sandbank of treaty-era facades, iron balconies and huge banyans, quiet on weekday mornings and walkable in under an hour.
- Yum cha — prawn dumplings, siu mai, rice-noodle rolls, chicken feet, custard buns, pots of bitter tea refilled for hours. Go where locals queue.
- 陳家祠 — the great Lingnan lineage house of the 1890s, brick, wood and stone carving thick enough to study for an hour.
- Enning Road and Yongqing Lane — arcade-fronted qilou houses, opera stages and tea houses, a short walk from a sandstone Gothic cathedral built entirely of cut stone.
- Yuexiu Park to the river — the Five Rams statue, a stretch of Ming city wall and the octagonal Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall of 1931.
Day trips
- 佛山 — a short metro or rail hop for the Ancestral Temple, its opera stage and martial-arts shrines to Wong Fei-hung and Ip Man.
- 順徳(シュントゥー) — a Foshan district with two centuries of reputation as the cradle of Cantonese cooking.
- 珠海 — about an hour by inter-city rail, a low-rise seaside city on the western Delta.
- Hong Kong or Macau — both are separate customs territories reached by land or water from the mainland; confirm current entry requirements for your passport with official channels before booking either leg.
A 2-day Guangzhou itinerary
- 1日目 — Yum cha at a proper tea house, then Shamian and the cathedral on foot. Afternoon in Yuexiu Park, evening up the Canton Tower, supper at a siu mei counter.
- 2日目 — Chen Clan Hall early, arcade-lane browsing toward Yongqing, a museum in Zhujiang New Town, and a Pearl River crossing or boat as the lights come on.
What to eat
This is the city that set the rules. Dim sum is breakfast and lunch, never dinner: steamer baskets of prawn dumplings, beef balls, lotus-leaf rice and char siu buns, with tea poured for your neighbour first and two fingers tapped on the table in thanks. Then a siu mei window with roast goose and lacquered pork hanging in it, a soup sealed in a jar that has simmered all day, river fish steamed with ginger and spring onion rather than sauced, and rice noodles fried with scorched edges. Finish with double-skin milk.
FAQ
- Is Guangzhou worth visiting on a first trip to China? — Yes, if food is anywhere near the reason you travel. It is the least formal of the mega-cities, and two days gives you the river, the old lanes and the best cheap eating in the country.
- How many days do you need in Guangzhou for the food alone? — One full day covers the arc — morning yum cha, a roast-meat lunch, congee at night. Two lets you send half a day to Shunde, where the cooking gets obsessive.
- Should you stay in Guangzhou or Shenzhen in the Pearl River Delta? — Guangzhou, for history, language and eating. Shenzhen is newer and built around malls and offices, so it suits electronics and design studios more than sightseeing.
