Jiuzhaigou Travel Guide 2026 — Blue Lakes and Waterfalls

Water is the whole show at Jiuzhaigou (九寨沟, the Valley of Nine Villages), an alpine valley in north-west Sichuan where calcium-laden streams have spent millennia building stepped lakes, terraced pools and wide veils of waterfall over drowned timber. The same afternoon can give you turquoise, cobalt and jade, which is why UNESCO inscribed the valley in 1992. For a first trip it is unusually kind: boardwalks and park buses do the work, so the scenery arrives with no hiking experience at all.

Best time to visit

Mid-September to mid-October, when golden poplar and birch sit against blue water and the flow is full. Late October is the colour peak, and the week after National Day is the quietest window inside the best season — 1 to 7 October brings the largest crowds of the year. By early November the leaves are gone and the valley turns cold and pale. Spring has water and blossom but little colour, and summer is green, rainy and busy with domestic families.

How many days you need

• 2 days — the right answer. One day for the two long arms of the valley at walking pace, one for the terraced lower valley and the waterfalls, with bus queues absorbed instead of fought.
• 1 day — physically possible, and the shuttle system makes it workable: ride to the top of one arm at first bus and work down. Expect to share every viewpoint.
• 3 days — only to add Huanglong and the drive out, since parts of the valley stay closed while it recovers from earthquake damage.

Getting there & around

A regional airport sits in the valley, but service has been irregular since the 2017 earthquake, so confirm what is operating before you plan around a flight. Most travellers come overland from Chengdu: good roads, a very long day, often broken at Songpan or at Dujiangyan and Wenchuan on the way back. Inside the park private vehicles are not allowed — entry is by timed, real-name ticket, bookable in advance, and shuttle buses plus wooden boardwalks carry you lake to lake. Sleep in the town at the gate so you are first in the queue. Altitude is mild on the lake belt at around 2,000 m, but the upper arms sit past 3,000 m, so take your first afternoon slowly.

Top things to do

• Five Flower Lake (Wuhua Hai) — the clearest water in the valley, with drowned tree trunks visible on the bottom through several metres of blue.
• Nuorilang Waterfall — the broadest, a shallow curtain over a mossy cliff; early light hits it face-on.
• Pearl Shoal Waterfall — water rippling over a calcified shelf like running gravel, with a boardwalk to its foot.
• Long Lake (Chang Hai) — the highest lake, a bus ride up the Zechawa arm, with a boardwalk climbing the slope above it.
• Five Colour Pool and Mirror Lake — small, impossibly coloured pools that reward arriving before the crowd moves on.
• Shuzheng terraces — stacked lakes and a wooden pagoda bridge at the mouth of the valley.

Day trips

• Huanglong (黄龙) — a hillside of terraced travertine pools under snow peaks, its own World Heritage site and a long round trip from the valley. The boardwalk sits well above 3,000 m, so treat it as a genuine altitude day.
• Songpan — a Ming-era walled town with Tibetan, Hui and Qiang quarters on the road out, and a sensible overnight that breaks the drive back to Chengdu.
• Anything beyond these two costs you valley time; if Huanglong is not on your list, walk the Shuzheng boardwalks instead.

A two-day Jiuzhaigou itinerary

• Day 1 — first bus up the Zechawa arm for Long Lake and the Five Colour Pool, reverse out, then up the Rize arm and walk it downhill through Five Flower Lake and Mirror Lake, finishing at Nuorilang.
• Day 2 — the Shuzheng terraces at a walking pace from early morning, the lower waterfalls before the buses fill, then the evening performance by the gate or an early start on the long road out.

What to eat

This is Tibetan and Qiang country inside Sichuan, so expect yak — dried, stewed, or bubbling in a hotpot with radish and glass noodles — alongside qingke barley cakes, barley wine and butter tea that tastes better than it sounds after a cold morning. Farm kitchens cook potatoes, wild greens and cured pork simply and well. The strip by the park gate is stocked for returning visitors, with chilli fish and dry-fried beans on every menu. Drink constantly, and go easy on alcohol at height.
