April to October is the sensible band. Spring warms the lake terraces; autumn is the showpiece — the city flower is the chrysanthemum, and October fills the parks, medians and walls with enormous displays that bring out domestic crowds, so book trains and real-name tickets early. July and August are flat-out hot, winters are grey and biting, and shoulder-season visits reward you with empty courtyards and cheap everything.

Getting there & around
Henan’s main airport, Zhengzhou Xinzheng (CGO), sits between the two cities about an hour away by road. The Zhengzhou–Kaifeng intercity railway links Zhengzhou East to Kaifeng in roughly half an hour, with a second downtown station; onward buses and DiDi are cheap and easy. Inside the old wall ring every top sight is fifteen minutes apart — the circuit is built for an afternoon walk plus short hops. Book timed park entry ahead on the official site or through Trip.com, especially for the chrysanthemum month, when weekends run hot.

- Shan-Shaanxi-Gansu Guild Hall — the finest wood carving in town: opera scenes and birds in openwork across a merchant house.
- Xiangguo Temple and the Bao Gong shrines — the Song state monastery of Water Margin fame, and the memorial halls of the upright Judge Bao.

- Zhengzhou — half an hour by intercity rail; Henan’s museums there turn Kaifeng’s Song chapter into a full Central Plains story.
- Shaolin and Dengfeng — two-plus hours southwest via Zhengzhou; long for one day, but a clean second day from Kaifeng.

What to eat
Kaifeng claims the birthplace of the soup-filled dumpling — bite a window in the wrapper, drain the broth, then eat the rest — and it is a breakfast institution, not a souvenir. After that: stir-fried mung-bean jelly, cumin lamb baked into flatbread, cold salty barrel chicken, peanut and sesame confections, and the Gulou stalls where the city eats like the Song capital it used to be.
