Leshan Emei Travel Guide 2026 — Buddha and Golden Summit

Two sights, one trip, one UNESCO listing. Leshan’s Giant Buddha is a 71-metre Maitreya carved into a river cliff in the Tang dynasty; Emeishan, an hour south, is one of Chinese Buddhism’s four sacred mountains, a chain of temple forests climbing to a wind-blasted summit above 3,000 m. Since 1996 the pair has been protected as a single scenic area, and every sensible itinerary out of Chengdu does the same thing: the Buddha today, the mountain tomorrow.

Best time to visit

April to October, with caveats. Summer is green, wet and crowded with pilgrims; rain on the mountain is common, but the famous cloud seas are at their most violent just after a shower clears. September and October bring the clearest air and the best odds of a sunrise above the cloud. Leshan itself is comfortable nearly all year, though the cliff path below the Buddha’s feet can close in flood season and the viewing boats stop in heavy rain, so check conditions locally. Avoid the first week of October.

How many days you need

  • 1 day, Leshan — boat view of the Buddha, the cliff descent to its feet, then the sculpture park across the hill and a very good dinner.
  • 2 days, Emeishan — one day for the lower temples and monkey valleys, one for the bus-and-cable run to the Golden Summit, ideally overnighting up high for sunrise.
  • 3 days for the pair — the standard shape, and the version this guide assumes.

Getting there & around

Leshan is about 130 km south of Chengdu — an hour or so on the high-speed line, then a short taxi to the riverfront. Emeishan has its own station on the same rail corridor, in the base town below the mountain gate, and the two are roughly 40 km apart, so hop them directly rather than backtracking to Chengdu. On Emei, park buses switchback up to Leidongping and a cable car covers the last steep hour; the alternative is the classic two-day on-foot climb from Baoguo Temple. Mind the height difference when you plan: the base town is warm, while the Golden Summit can be near freezing with real wind even in July. If your head starts pounding and you feel sick at the top, that is altitude, not the bus ride — go back down and sleep low.

Top things to do

  • The Buddha from the river — a short boat loop is the only way to see the whole figure at once.
  • The Nine Turns cliff path — down past the Buddha’s ear to the platform at his feet and up the far side. Narrow, one-directional, with long peak-season queues.
  • Oriental Small Buddha — a modern carved-cliff sculpture park on the same hillside; visitors either love it or walk past.
  • Emei’s lower temples — Baoguo, Fuhu and Qingyin Pavilion for camphor trees, moss steles and stream noise.
  • The Golden Summit — sunrise, cloud sea and the Buddha’s Halo optical phenomenon, plus the bronze ten-direction Samantabhadra above the cliff.
  • The macaques at Hongya Pingxiang and Jieyindian — wild-ish monkeys that will open a bag. Keep food out of sight, zip everything, and never back away from a bold one.

Day trips

  • Mengdingshan — the celebrated tea mountain on the road back toward Chengdu, traditionally credited as the birthplace of cultivated tea in China, and a calm half-day of plantations and pavilions.
  • Dujiangyan and Qingcheng Mountain — the ancient irrigation works and the forested Taoist mountain sit on Chengdu’s rail network, and pair naturally as the front half of a three-day loop.

A 3-day Leshan and Emei itinerary

  • Day 1 — early train to Leshan, boat out for the full view, then the Nine Turns descent to the Buddha’s feet. Eat properly before the short hop to the Emei base town.
  • Day 2 — up the mountain: Qingyin Pavilion and the monkey valleys, bus to Leidongping, cable car and the last flight of steps to the summit. Stay up high for sunrise, or descend for dinner and sleep low.
  • Day 3 — a second summit attempt in clearer weather, or Wannian Temple and the old stone road on foot, then the train out.

What to eat

Leshan has one of the best short eating lists in Sichuan: qiaojiao beef, thinly shaved and cooked in a clear herbal broth you dip in dry chilli; sweet-skin duck, lacquered and served cold; and bobo chicken, skewers steeped in chilli oil. Emei is gentler — tofu, bamboo shoots, wild greens and tea, with vegetarian halls at the temple kitchens where meat is not served. The mountain towns live off day-trippers, so eat where the local plates are stacked high.

FAQ

  • Can you do Leshan and Emeishan together from Chengdu? — Yes, and most people should — the two are about 40 km apart and share a rail corridor. Three days is comfortable: one at the Giant Buddha, two on the mountain.
  • How fit do you need to be for the Golden Summit? — The bus-plus-cable route ends with a steep stair climb, hard at 3,000 m but short. The classic two-day walk from the base temple is a serious undertaking needing decent fitness and a summit bed.
  • Are the monkeys on Emei dangerous? — They are wild animals that have learned to raid bags, and bites do happen. Keep food invisible, hold nothing in your hands, and do not approach infants or stare at adults.
