Steam rises out of the ground in Tengchong (腾冲), a far-west Yunnan county where dozens of extinct volcanoes poke through forested farmland and the Rehai geothermal field boils down every gully. Alongside it sits Heshun, a market town built by families who made money on the Burma road and came home to raise ancestral halls and a village library. This is a low-intensity destination of hot springs, crater rims and good food — the best antidote here for travellers weary of long travel days.
“Volcanic hot-spring town of western Yunnan.”

Best time to visit
November to April is the dry half of the year and the right window. Mid-November to early December is the reason many people come: the ginkgo village of Jiangyi above town turns solid yellow and the trees drop gold into the courtyards. December to February is cool, bright and perfect for soaking; March and April warm up and everything flowers. May to October is wet — the springs are worth it regardless, but crater walks get slippery and hill roads can slide.
How many days you need
- 2 days — Heshun and the Rehai valley on one, the volcanic cluster on the other. That suits the pace, and it is the number to plan around.
- 1 day — Heshun in the morning, the geothermal valley in the afternoon, then leave. Doable, though you will be hurrying the one place that refuses to be hurried.
- 3 to 4 days — if you want to walk a stretch of the Gaoligong Mountains, chase ginkgo in season, or keep going towards the border towns.
Getting there & around
Tengchong has its own airport with flights from Kunming and other major cities. Overland it is roughly a half-day drive from Dali via Baoshan and a long haul from Kunming; the nearest railway station sits on the line that stops short at Baoshan, so the final leg is by road either way. There is no useful public transport between the sights, so a car with a driver, or a taxi day, is worth the trouble — the county spreads across 30 km of countryside, with Heshun a short hop from town and Rehai and the volcanoes each needing their own trip. At around 1,600 m the air is dry and bright but easy, so height is not something you need to plan here.
Top things to do
- Rehai (热海) — the geothermal valley: steaming gullies, sulphur streams, a vivid green boiling pool known as the Big Boiling Pot, and stalls selling eggs and peanuts cooked by the ground itself.
- Hot-spring bathing — pools are separated by temperature and mineral content. Go in gently, hydrate properly, and stay in far less time than feels natural.
- The volcanic cluster — walk into and around the crater rims at Maanshan and Dayanshan, then climb the far side to see how many cones hide in the farmland.
- Heshun — a Ming and Qing grid of lanes, ancestral halls, wetland paths and a remarkable early twentieth-century village library, built with money from the southern trade routes.
- The 1944 cemetery and museum — burial ground of the soldiers who retook the town, widely described as the first county seat recovered from Japanese occupation.
- Copper and jade — hand-beaten copperware and Burmese jade are still the local trades; a teapot bought where it is made beats a souvenir.
Day trips
- The Gaoligong Mountains — forest walks on the western flank of the range, where it drops all the way to the Salween and the birdlife is legendary.
- Diantan and the old border market, towards the first boundary marker on the China–Myanmar frontier.
- Ruili — the border city further west, with another country visible across the river and a lively jade market; usually an overnight on the way onwards.
A 2-day Tengchong itinerary
- Day 1 — Heshun early, while the coaches are elsewhere, wandering lanes, halls and the library; lunch in town; then the Rehai valley in late afternoon and a long, well-timed soak after dark.
- Day 2 — crater rims and lava terraces in the morning, the 1944 cemetery and museum before lunch, and either ginkgo up in November or an early flight out.
What to eat
Tengchong eats like an old trade town. Breakfast is rice-noodle shreds in a braised-pork or fermented-bean broth, slippery and heavily seasoned; the dish locals are proudest of is a fried rice-cake plate named, by tradition, after an emperor it rescued. In season there are wild mushrooms, Gaoligong bamboo shoots and river fish, and the geothermal area sells eggs boiled in the ground for dessert.
FAQ
- When is the best time to visit Tengchong for hot springs? — The dry season, November to April, with December to February most comfortable for soaking. Mid-November to early December adds the ginkgo village, which is the reason to pin down a specific week.
- What is there to do besides the hot springs? — Walk the crater rims of the volcanic cluster, spend half a day in Heshun’s lanes and library, climb the Gaoligong foothills, and look at the town’s Second World War cemetery and museum.
- How many days do you need in Tengchong? — Two is right: one day for Heshun and the geothermal valley, one for the volcanoes and town museums. Add a third only if you are trekking or continuing towards the border towns.
