China is huge but surprisingly easy to move around once you know the four tools locals use: high-speed rail between cities, the metro and Didi within them, mobile payments for everything, and a working eSIM for maps and translation. Together they turn a daunting country into a smooth trip — and they are the closest thing to modern “Chinese technology” a traveller actually feels.
Between cities
- Tàu cao tốc — 300 km/h trains link most major cities; book real-name tickets on 12306 and arrive 40 minutes early for security.
- Chuyến bay nội địa — for long western hops (Jiuzhaigou, Dunhuang, Urumqi); often cheaper than a 10-hour train.
- Private driver / charter car — best for mountain regions, rural spots and multi-generation groups where rail does not reach the door.
In the city
- Tàu điện ngầm — cheap and English-signed in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and more.
- Didi — China’s ride-hailing app, with an English interface and card or Alipay payment.
- Bikes and walking — flat old towns and waterfronts are best on two wheels.
Payments & money
Link an international card to Alipay and WeChat Pay before you land and you can pay by QR almost everywhere, from the metro to a bowl of noodles. Carry a little cash as backup for small vendors.
Staying online & translating
Install a China eSIM so maps, messaging and translation work the moment you land; Google services are blocked, so download offline maps and a camera-translation app. A private guide removes the language barrier entirely on day trips.

Câu hỏi thường gặp
- Is high-speed rail the best way to travel around China? — For most routes under about 800 km, yes — China's high-speed network is fast, punctual and comfortable and links nearly every major city. Fly for far-west routes like Jiuzhaigou or Dunhuang.
- Do I need Alipay or WeChat Pay in China? — Essentially, yes — cards and cash are less common, and a foreign card linked to Alipay or WeChat Pay lets you pay for almost everything, from metro tickets to street food.
- How do I get internet in China? — Install a China eSIM before you fly (it activates on landing) or buy a local SIM; note that many Western apps and sites are blocked without a VPN, and Google services do not work.
- How do I get around a city? — Metro is cheap and English-signed in big cities; Didi works in-app with an English interface; a private driver with a licensed guide is the easiest option for day trips and multi-city routes.
