رحلة طريق الحرير (شيآن–دونهوانغ–كاشغار) لمدة ١١ يومًا: دليل شامل يتضمن الأسعار والحجز

An 11-day Xi’an–Dunhuang–Kashgar route is one of the most rewarding ways to see the Chinese Silk Road, but it covers roughly 4,000 km of Gansu and Xinjiang. The distance, not the sightseeing, is the constraint. This guide sets out a realistic structure, explains how transport between the key stops actually works, and flags what you must verify yourself before booking. It replaces the earlier thin version of this page, which listed eleven days but filled only six with content.

What an 11-day Silk Road itinerary can realistically cover

The honest answer: Xi’an, a Gansu corridor run (Zhangye, Jiayuguan, Dunhuang), and Kashgar — with internal flights doing the heavy lifting. Overland the whole way is possible but would consume most of your eleven days in transit.

A workable shape looks like this:

  • Days 1–2: Xi’an. Terracotta Warriors, city wall, Muslim Quarter. Two nights minimum.
  • Days 3–4: Fly to Zhangye or Jiayuguan. Danxia landform near Zhangye; Jiayuguan fort and the western end of the Ming wall.
  • Days 5–6: Dunhuang. Mogao Grottoes, Mingsha dunes and Crescent Lake. Mogao tickets are capped daily and must be reserved in advance on the official site — check which cave categories are on sale and whether your passport details are required at booking.
  • Days 7–9: Fly to Kashgar. Old City, Id Kah area, Sunday livestock market (verify the current market day and location locally, as it has moved before).
  • Days 10–11: Buffer and departure. Keep at least one unplanned day. Domestic flight delays in Xinjiang are common.

Note that the original page listed five identical “free day” entries. That is not an itinerary. Use those days for the Gansu corridor instead.

Getting between the stops

قطار فائق السرعة now links Xi’an with Lanzhou, Zhangye, Jiayuguan and Dunhuang along the Hexi Corridor, which is far more comfortable than the old overnight trains. For the Dunhuang–Kashgar leg, flying is the practical choice; check current schedules on the airline or a booking platform, as routes change seasonally.

Buying tickets with a foreign passport has its own quirks. Our الدليل لشراء تذاكر القطارات الصينية باستخدام جواز سفر أجنبي walks through the verification steps, and the دليل القطارات فائقة السرعة covers seat classes and station procedures. For the wider network, see the دليل السفر بالقطار في الصين.

Private car versus public transport on this route

A private car with driver makes sense in three specific places: the Zhangye Danxia approach, the Jiayuguan fort and overland stretches, and day trips out of Dunhuang or Kashgar where public buses are slow or infrequent. It does not make sense for the long intercity legs, where rail and air win on both time and comfort.

If you book a driver, agree in writing on: daily hours, whether fuel and tolls are included, waiting time at sites, and the drop-off point. Drivers timing arrivals to beat tour-bus crowds is a genuine benefit at popular sites, but confirm the site’s actual opening time yourself rather than relying on a driver’s estimate.

When to go, and when to avoid

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) give the best balance of temperature and crowd levels across both Gansu and Xinjiang. Summer in the corridor is hot and dry; winter is cold with short daylight and some seasonal closures at remoter sites.

Avoid Chinese national holidays, when domestic travel surges and trains and hotels fill early. Check the exact dates each year on the official government holiday notice rather than assuming fixed dates — the China public holidays page lists them. Also check the تقويم المهرجانات والطقس شهريًّا قبل تحديد التواريخ.

Practical preparation for Gansu and Xinjiang

Mobile payment is close to universal; carry a small cash backup for rural areas and markets. Set up payment apps before you fly — the دليل السفر بدون نقد explains the setup and the common failure points.

Connectivity matters more here than in eastern China, because you will rely on maps and translation between stops. Decide between an eSIM and a physical SIM before departure and test it while still at home. Entry rules are a separate question: check whether your nationality and route qualify for بدون تأشيرة لمدة ٢٤٠ ساعة and what documentation the border expects. Start with the نظرة عامة على قواعد التأشيرات الصينية and confirm current requirements with your nearest Chinese embassy or consulate, since rules change and this page cannot confirm your individual eligibility.

Finally, register your accommodation as required and carry your passport at all times — checks at transport hubs in Xinjiang are routine.

الأسئلة الشائعة

Is 11 days enough for Xi’an to Kashgar?

Yes, if you fly the long legs and accept two or three stops rather than a full overland crossing. If you want to travel entirely by rail and road, you need considerably more time.

Do I need a permit for Xinjiang?

Requirements vary by nationality and by area, and some districts require additional registration. Rules change, so verify with your embassy or consulate and with your accommodation before travelling rather than relying on older trip reports.

How far ahead should I book Mogao Grottoes tickets?

As early as your dates allow. Daily visitor numbers are capped and the official booking channel is the only reliable source for release timing, ticket categories and passport requirements. Check the official site directly.

Can I do this route independently without a tour?

Yes. Rail and air cover the long legs, and local drivers can be arranged on arrival or in advance. The main challenges are language, advance ticketing for capped sites, and logistics on the days you move between cities.
