Chinese folk customs are the living traditions of everyday life and the calendar — festivals, family rituals, etiquette, taboos and the customs of 55 recognised ethnic minorities. They are most visible at festivals, in old towns, and in the minority regions of Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan.
Festivals and the lunar calendar
- Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) — the biggest holiday: reunions, red envelopes and firecrackers.
- Lantern Festival — the finale, with lanterns and riddles.
- Qingming — tomb-sweeping and honouring ancestors.
- Fiesta del Barco Dragón — races and sticky-rice dumplings.
- Fiesta de Medio Otoño — mooncakes and family reunion under the full moon.
Everyday customs and taboos
- Red means luck and celebration; white is associated with mourning — avoid all-white gifts.
- Give gifts in even numbers, but avoid the number four, which sounds like the word for “death”.
- Never stick chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice — it resembles funeral incense.
- Remove your shoes when entering someone’s home.
Ethnic minorities and where to meet them
- Yunnan (Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La) — Bai, Naxi and Tibetan cultures.
- Guizhou and western Hunan (Fenghuang, Zhaoxing) — Miao and Dong villages, silverwork and song.
- Sichuan and Qinghai — Tibetan monasteries and pilgrim culture.
- Xinjiang and the Silk Road — Uyghur bazaars, music and cuisine.
Unique traditions
- Tea culture — from Fujian gongfu cha to Sichuan gaiwan teahouses.
- Feng shui and the symbolism woven into gardens, homes and tombs.
- Face-changing Sichuan opera, dragon and lion dances, and paper-cutting.
